COMEDY IT'S A FUNNY THING.

I hate ‘The Office!’ There I said it at last! What a relief. After reading endless glowing reviews about Ricky Gervois & ‘The Office’ & ‘Extras’, I couldn’t contain myself any longer & had to shout out to the waiting world that I find his brand of comedy boring & unfunny!! Perhaps he should have stayed in his pop band. (What were they called, Shonna’s Dancing?) That’s just my opinion though so all you Gervois fans can just ignore it if you want.
(The world probably wasn’t waiting to read my opinion & probably doesn’t care. I’m sure Ricky won’t lose any sleep). I tried watching ‘The Office’ believe me I did. I just couldn’t get into it because I hate cringe comedy. Ditto ‘Extras’ & ‘Seinfeld’ as well.
‘Extras’ was just as bad & also rather slow & unfunny. The replacement show however is great! ‘The IT Crowd’ was made by the people who made ‘Black Books’ & both are very much in the absurdist line of comedy. Comic situations that are obviously absurd rather than realistic. I suppose being brought up on The Goons, The Goodies, Monty Python, Hitch Hiker & Red Dwarf I have developed a taste for inventive situations that delve into the realms of the ridiculous.
I suppose that’s why I also love sci-fi because it goes beyond simply looking at people & their interpersonal relationships & starts putting them on space ships, or in future worlds. Who needs romantic soap operas when you’ve got a TARDIS! (Mind you the last series of Dr Who did get a bit love sick didn’t it?)
So anyway there are different styles of comedy that suit different tastes. As I like to say: “Different Brands for Different Hands”. (That’s my saying & you can’t have it!) I think all entertainment reviewers should begin their reviews by qualifying if their review is merely their subjective opinion or a view that should be universally accepted.
Instead of saying: “This movie was crap & very body should hate it!” They should clarify their view by saying: “If you love gross-out black comedy about ethnic stereotypes & lesbian communist geologists in wheelchairs then you’re going to love this new movie. If not then stay at home.”
As a lover of progressive rock music I get so sick of reviews written by people who are obviously non-believers. Why ask a punk rocker to review the latest ‘Yes’ DVD when they are obviously going to hate it? So reviewers should either state their personal preferences (or prejudices) & stick to reviewing that genre, or try & be a bit more objective.
Therefore if you love cringe comedy such as ‘The Office’, ‘Extras’ or ‘Seinfeld’, then don’t come to my house ‘cos there won’t be anything like that in my DVD cupboard! (I do however have everything Red Dwarf ever made. (And Yes for that matter)).
