CONFUSING BEAUTY

I recently went to see the film ‘Sleeping Beauty’ starring Emily Browning as a prostitute. I saw it purely for artistic reasons you understand. I will say however that several years ago I was in college watching some of the ‘Lemony Snicket’ film. I turned the guy next to me & said: “I don’t know how old she is but she’s hot!’
He responded by saying: “I’ll tell her you said that.”
“What do you mean?”
“I went to school with her” he said.
“Oh great, now I’m going to jail!”
Emily is now a respectable 22 years old so seeing her get nude on the big screen is acceptable. If that is your only reason for seeing this film then remember, she plays a prostitute. As I discovered much to my consternation, whenever she gets naked there was also a naked man in the scene with her. They were also rather old too!
Anyway I must say this film tended to reinforce my view of Australian films. It was terrible!
It was either supposed to be all moody & surreal, or the script was just plain rubbish! I couldn’t understand anything, & kept wondering what the hell was going on, who was who & why were they doing whatever it was they were doing. Sometimes they didn’t do anything which was just as confusing! I had no real empathy with any of the characters & didn’t really care what happened to them, whatever it was that happened!
I felt the same way when I saw Candy with Heath Ledger & Abbey Cornish. I only watched that because we interviewed them at the AFI awards. Abbey looked pretty damn hot so I also watched the film Hopscotch in which she gets naked. Again I was watching it for purely artistic reasons. Again I thought both films were terrible. Moody, confusing, couldn’t work out what was going or why.
Even Kenny, which involved no nudity, had a rather nasty undertone. People where horrible, they did stupid things, I had little empathy for most of the characters. All I can say is, if it wasn’t for the nudity I don’t think I would watch Australian films at all.
