DEEPER PURPLE

September 8th 2008 03:31
There has been a bit of excitement latterly with the unexpected appearance of a new advert for ‘Jaguar’ featuring the music of Deep Purple! It uses their 1968 cover version of the song ‘Hush’ recorded for their ‘Shades of Deep Purple’ album. Even though they re-recorded this song in 1987 for their ‘Nobody’s Perfect’ live album, this advert features excerpts from their original 1968 version!
As a completist who likes to collect everything a band does, I have all 3 albums from the original line up with Rod Evans on vocals & Nick Simper on bass. Lovers of ‘Smoke on the Water’ will probably be saying: “Hey if it didn’t have Ian Gillan in it then I’m not interested!”
Well I have always been an avid Purple fan way back to the 1970s. I even got excited about the 1989 ‘Slaves & Masters’ album with Joe Lynn Turner. This album received an almost universal thumbs down from most of the fans. Roger Glover was particularly pleased when I told him I loved the album. I even made a brief appearance on a channel 9 news story when Deep Purple came to town in 1999.
I was interviewed explaining that the engineer of my 3 track CD ‘Bend in the Sky’ commented that I had rewritten ‘Highway Star’ 3 times. I was only mildly affronted by this comment.
Anyway it’s nice to know that the early days of Deep Purple haven’t been forgotten. If you check out the ‘Deep Purple – Heavy Metal Pioneers’ video you will see the film clip from Hugh Hefner’s TV show which has Purple performing their song live surrounded by hip young go go dancers. The song was actually live, not mimed!
Those of you who have seen ‘Heavy Metal Pioneers’ will no doubt remember Joe Lynn Turner saying: “I’m not just going to sing somebody else’s drivel.” Lousy choice of words Joe! With all those power ballads they recorded for ‘Slaves & Masters’ & with everybody dying their hair or wearing a wig to try & look young & hip again, it’s no wonder they didn’t do well.
Anyway I’ve always enjoyed some of those early albums, especially the self titled ‘Deep Purple’ with the Hieronymus Bosch painting on the cover. Check out ‘Chasing Shadows’ ‘The Painter’ & ‘April’ if you ever want to hear a side of Deep Purple you never knew existed.
