HISTORY IS JUST LIKE PAY TV – ENDLESS REPEATS!

Well here is my follow up to the WikiLeaks blog.
I was a bit too young to understand all that Watergate business I was seeing on the news back in the 70s. I was also too young for Daniel Ellsberg & his leaking of the Pentagon Papers. It seems strange that such a well documented story has eluded me for so long. It was only when I saw the documentary on ABC recently, long after Wikileaks, that I noticed that once again history is repeating itself. As I like to say, if you don’t learn the mistakes of history you won’t know which ones you’re repeating.
Why is it that I haven’t heard Julian Assange being referred to as ‘The New Daniel Ellsberg’? Why isn’t Wikileaks being called ‘Pentagon Papers mark 2’? Perhaps everybody, including the journalists had forgotten about Daniel Ellsberg & they thought that Wikileaks was a brand new phenomenon.
Hearing news reports that Assange is worried he might be sent to Guantanamo Bay & face the death penalty if he is extradited to the U.S. sounds like something straight out of the cold war, or China!
If he is acquitted of the rape charges then he’ll only have to face charges over leaking these documents. At least we have Obama in the White House & not Nixon. If Wikileaks had been around in the reign of George Bush, I wouldn’t be surprised to find if Julian Assange had been rendered to Egypt for secret torture! He probably would have ended up in a cell next to David Hicks at Guantanamo Bay!
At the end of the day, it is all material for my sitcom MIND PATROL. At one time I was worried that the U.S. would become a kinder gentler place under Obama & that I would struggle to paint them as the bad guys threatening the world with their mind reading technology. I would have to make the Chinese the bad guys for the Australians to battle against. Then half my sitcom would have to be sub titled.
Fortunately for me, the recent elections in the U.S. & the extreme rhetoric coming from the TEA PARTY movement, have practically written my sitcom for me! All we need now is for Sarah Palin to become the next President of the U.S. & we’ll be hearing: “Nuke the son of a bitch!” blaring from the White House, just like in the good old days of Nixon!
